Every now and then, something happens in Canberra that makes people actually find it interesting. Today was one of those rare days. At 9 o'clock this morning, the Prime Minister stepped down following seemingly overnight challenges to his leadership. Less than 24 hours after it all began, we had ourselves a shiny new PM.
With the Prime Minister acting as the 'big boss' for most of the city's population, this called for an easy work day for most of us. While I turned my computer into a pure media monitoring machine and settled in comfortably for the morning, Chadwiko braved the cold and the fog to head over to Parliament House and see what he could snap. Without a press pass (yet!), and the morning show vultures in the prime positions, pickings were pretty slim. But I liked this shot of a school excursion posing outside. Visiting Parliament seems to be the dreaded excursion routine for Canberran kids, but I'd like to think that the media circus spiced things up for them a little.
To wind down after a long day of serious political business, we headed out to witness the thrills of the Australian Rock Paper Scissors Championships, oddly enough being held just down the road. This was a sporting spectacle of far greater magnitude than any World Cup. Chadwiko entered and started strong, but in true Australian sporting style, was red carded in the second round. So no trip to the international championships in Canada for us. This year, anyway.
On a more positive note, he did manage to come away from an unofficial challenge with a crisp ten dollar note. Our happiness at this outcome is testament to how financially unrewarding full time work really is in this expensive city.
After all that excitement, it seems like time to get some rest. After all, tomorrow is a very big day indeed, and one of my favourite days of the year- the one and only Chadmas.
